                                                        Featured Organization: REBUILD Globally

                                                        Picture
As of October 2010, more than nine months after the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti, at least 1.3 million Haitians continue to live in makeshift camps in and around Port-au-Prince.   In response to the overwhelming quake, REBUILD Globally was established to improve the lives of those most affected in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas. Our mission is to improve the quality of life and create healthier environments for people in distressed communities by using new and innovative techniques that promote recycling, eco-friendly development, gainful employment, agriculture and education.  Our two primary goals are to: 1) Provide living-wage employment opportunities for Haiti’s most vulnerable populations to foster self-sufficiency and independent living; and 2) Reduce waste in Haiti through creative re-purposing of recyclable materials—especially those which are typically burned (i.e. tires and plastic water bags).   We believe that the key to Haiti’s recovery lies in the empowerment of its citizenry. We support the empowerment of Haitian individuals and families through the provision of living-wage employment, technical training, and education.

We currently employ 7 artisans, who construct recycled tire sandals with macramé straps, bracelets and hair bands out of recycled rubber and wallets made from old milk cartons and tin cans.   We provide each of our employees with a healthful meal.   For additional information or ways to support our mission, please feel free to contact us via e-mail at rebuildglobally@gmail.com.  You can also visit our website www.rebuildglobally.org or our FaceBook page for more information or to make an online donation.
